Sometimes in a young life, a person appears at a time when there's a position vacant in the circle of friends. Someone who for no obvious reason gravitates to the centre of things when relationships are still far from settled. Such a friend can be there for a long time, sharing the highs and lows. Later it can be difficult to explain to the new partner what it is this old friend offers and why they are still around (apart from the fact that they've always been around). There are times in adult life you just have to let some people go.
