This November will see indie popsters Brilliant Fanzine release their debut album ‘Then Comes Monday’ through Popboomerang Records. Framed by the sonically vicarious single ‘Change For You’, the release is the bands first since their debut EP ‘One In 10,000’ shook the Australian music landscape in 2005. Brilliant Fanzine began in late 2003 when England expats Matt O’Neill and Chris Tinkler caught the attention of producer Greg O’Shea (Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Bowie, Crowded House). By mid-2004 they had recorded eight songs on a very low budget, with some of the vocal tracks recorded in a bathroom. But as became very apparent – very quickly – the ingredients were all there. Hitting radio in early 2005, ‘One In 10,000’ earned rigorous high rotation airplay from JJJ, RRR, PBS and FBI, and saw Brilliant Fanzine being touted as “The next big thing” by Victoria’s largest selling paper the Sunday Herald Sun. The groundbreaking release went on to earn accolades from Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill and Robbie Buck, spending three months in the Triple J Net 50 and peaking at number 3. Brilliant Fanzine went on to be featured in the debut issue of J Mag as one of eight bands ‘Rocking Robbie’s [Buck] World.’ After the runaway success of ‘One In 10,000’, the Fanzine retreated somewhat from national limelight to regroup and look towards the album. They bolstered their line-up with the additions of Moira Fitzgerald on keys, with Paul Moses also officially joined the band after contributing on the EP. Now seven strong, the Melbourne indie ensemble set about making select festival appearances at the likes of Apollo Bay, making plenty of new fans along the way. Burying all preconceived notions, 2006 saw Brilliant Fanzine enter the studio to record their highly anticipated debut.Recorded with the assistance of producer Simon Polinski (The Church and Tim Finn) in his home studio, ‘Then Comes Monday’ reaches into the outer realms of genre, referencing 60’s pop, rock, psychedelia, country, disco, trance and indie music\'s finest. Meeting every Monday, the band upgraded from recording in the bathroom to a front room, albeit the same front room that the likes of Paul Kelly have recorded in. Condensing vivid lyrical melody amongst a bed of creamy harmony, ‘Then Comes Monday’ hints at an unraveling tension. Vocalist Matt O’Neill’s desperate yet restrained vocals deliver the underlying yearning, and within this delicate balance lies Brilliant Fanzine’s magnetism. ‘Then Comes Monday’ presents a band at peace within itself, yet at odds with a world spinning out of control around them. It’s this uneasy balance that transports their elaborate melodic pop from beyond its addictive nature to becoming truly inspirational. Brilliant Fanzine is: Matt O\'Neill – Vocals Chris Owens – Bass/Acoustic Guitar Chris Tinkler – Guitar Ed Reed – Guitar/Backing vocals Paul Moses – Guitar/Bass Glenn Chuck – Drums Moira Fitzgerald – Keys/Backing Vocals “In a period where the 70s and 80s have run wild across the musical landscape it’s possible that Brilliant Fanzine’s carefully orchestrated pop could be the hand that rocks the big riff cradle in 2007. If you’re looking for a band that can tie-up the 90s in such a way that its aural trademarks are delivered with only a hint of nostalgia and a finish that makes it a sound for the future then Brilliant Fanzine definitely have what it takes to be your 21st Century boys.” SuperFurry, www.fasterlouder.com.au “Bands Rocking Robbie’s World- Brilliant Fanzine: with members hailing from the UK, Canada and Australia, this decidedly multinational effort produces a subtle form of deceptively lush indie pop…despite being recorded in a kitchen and lounge room.” Robbie Buck, J-Mag “‘One in 10,000’ is really quite sublime. Melbournian five-piece Brilliant Fanzine have crafted an evocative song using little more than some acoustics, keys and a snare drum. It’s only their debut EP (and is really just a well-recorded demo), but already they can count amongst their fans none other than Triple J luminaries Richard Kingsmill and Robbie Buck. Add this insufferable dreamer to the list.” Michael Tran rockus.com.au “These folk were relatively unknown to me but once I heard their debut single ‘One in 10,000’, I became hooked. It’s a daring mix of indie rock and pop sensibilities but it works a charm. With five equally impressive songs found on this EP, including the fascinating energy of division, the orchestral instrumental of Reprise and the joyous almost epic Come down, Brilliant Fanzine look like firmly establishing themselves as “the” band to watch next year.” Mark Rasmussen, Buzz Mag “These guys could become an indie phenomenon” Danny Z Beat Magazine ... more
