New 7” Vinyl Single “Peter Says” (The Cat Protection Society Song) by John Kennedy

Peter Says is the new single from John Kennedy. The song, originally released on the recent JFK and the Midlife Crisis album on the Pop Boomerang label, has been remixed in Berlin by the album producer, Moe Jaksch. (The B-side, Change Is For The Good is previously unreleased.) Peter Says, part of a song cycle on the album, tells the tale of a middle aged independent musician with a penchant for bargains from opportunity shops in Sydney’s Inner West suburbs.

The Peter in the title is in fact, the drummer from John Kennedy’s 68 Comeback Special, Peter Timmerman. It was Peter’s repeated tales of Cat Protection Society op shop finds that inspired Kennedy to write this song. This is John Kennedy’s first vinyl release in nearly 20 years. Appropriately, this return to vinyl sings the praises of Sydney’s Inner West much like his earlier singles: King Street and Miracle (in Marrickville). Even the design of the picture sleeve cover, with an actual photo print stuck to each cover, recalls the layout of those singles.

The band John Kennedy's 68 Comeback Special, features the eponymous drummer Peter Timmerman, ex-Wiggle Murray Cook on guitar and former Pop Mechanics' leader Paul Scott on bass. Producer Moe Jaksch also adds some pedal steel guitar. Together with Kennedy, they have on this new single developed his urban and western stylings, bringing new strength to performances that blend pop, rock, folk and country. This single also continues Kennedy’s love affair with Sydney’s inner western suburbs.

The single Peter Says is released on the Popboomerang label (PB111). The song was originally released on the album JFK and the Midlife Crisis on the Popboomerang label in May 2017 (PB 105). For more information email ellavis@yahoo.com.au
