“Inside, Out’ reflects on the idea (and the lived reality, for inmates) of imprisonment. Joel and I both live in Castlemaine, in central Victoria, home to the Old Castlemaine Gaol – a gold rush era penitentiary – and the modern day Loddon Prison. We see these past and present prisons daily. The song is also inspired by two great books about imprisonment – Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s ‘One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich’ and Brian Keenan’s ‘An evil cradling.’” Josh Meadows
