Jericho: Out Of Luck

from The Melbourne Divide by Popboomerang

/

about

Jericho first emerged as one of the rising stars of the mid-1990s Melbourne indie pop scene, cutting their teeth at now defunct venues like The Punters Club, Prince of Wales Piano Bar and The Arthouse.

Formed by Melbourne pop identity Danny McDonald and bass player Bill Downie around 1990, the band was most active between 1995-1998 before entering into an 18-year hiatus.

They released four EPs and a bootleg cassette recorded for Triple J’s Australian Music Show, toured relentlessly up and down the east coast of Australia for three years and left behind a collection of unfinished recordings, intended for their debut long-player.

McDonald went on to become a prolific solo artist in his own right and has been a mainstay on the local scene as a member of P76, Oscarlima, Little Murders, The Stoneage Hearts among others.

Downie went onto become a respected winemaker and remaining original members Leigh Thomas and Geoff Barnes have moved on to pursue other musical interests.

In 2003, Popboomerang released a compilation of released and unreleased recordings by the band called Retrospective 1995-1998. The album has since almost sold out of its physical CD pressing despite the band not having performed live since 1998.

Now, after 18 years of inactivity, Jericho has announced it will reform for The Melbourne Divide, a curated label showcase event presented by Popboomerang Records as part of the 2016 City of Yarra Leaps and Bounds Festival.

The Jericho lineup has changed, but the songs and the sound remain intact with a new three-piece iteration comprising Downie, McDonald and drummer Shaun Lohoar (Blueline Medic, Pollyanna, Knievel, The Favourite Game).

There’s talk of new recordings, and possibly more shows. But for now, Jericho is content with revisiting their legacy – the songs they released and some they left behind almost two decades ago.

And as a fitting gesture, Popboomerang Records will be making the last remaining CD copies of Retrospective 1995-1998 available at the show – Saturday 9 July at the Yarra Hotel.
