about

Deserters present their rockin’ new single Lemon Kicks - a slice of pop/rock heaven with irresistible hooks, sugar-coated with classy vocals by songwriter Luke Thomas and Elly-May Barnes, in her debut appearance with Deserters.

Mixed by Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, P.J Harvey, The Panics) in New York, Lemon Kicks is also accompanied by a killer performance video introducing Deserters to the screen.

Lemon Kicks will be released on Friday 4 November on iTunes along with a physical CD EP, thru Popboomerang Records, which will also feature their previous (digital only) single release Stars Burn.

The Lemon Kicks / Stars Burn EP is a taster from all the good that’s to come from Deserters upcoming second album release due early 2012, being the follow up to their acclaimed 2009 Debut LP Pale Morning.

“There is a song that’s been buried in my skull for a few months now. It’s called ‘Waking Birds’, the opening track on this album by Australian band Deserters. If I don’t play it for a week, it keeps coming back to me at the front of my brain. It’s that kind of song, haunting, yearning, with pedal steel guitar underscoring the loneliness within. It’s one of my favourite songs of 2009.”
- Noel Mengel, Courier Mail (Brisbane)

Melbourne-based songwriter Luke Thomas is probably best known as the bass-playing half of The Pictures (in collaboration with You Am I’s Davey Lane). As guitarist, lead vocalist and producer of his own band, Deserters, he steps out from Lane’s shadow to shine the light on his own evocative, well-crafted songs. Rich with melody and a turn of phrase that reaches into the influential well of writers such as Steve Kilbey, Neil Finn and Grant McLennan, Thomas’s intuitive writing techniques capture a classic Australian quality. The three collections of organically-produced songs to date, recorded and released under the Deserters banner, trace the creative skill of a major songwriting talent.

“Thomas writes seemingly effortless pop/rock tunes, all low-key retro guitar gems and sweetly coated with gorgeous harmonies… The overall effect is one of warmth, clarity and impressive simplicity; just pure playing, confident songwriting and a no-frills approach which is totally disarming… One can only hope such talent doesn’t fly under the radar…”
- EJ Cartledge, Inpress Magazine
