The Bon Scotts play distinctively clamorous ramshackle folk-pop full of sweet melodies, arresting percussion and sing-along choruses. Theirs is an infectious blend of playful cynicism and youthful fancy, laced with irony and hype, unconventional hooks and a distinct, eclectic sound that has put them at the forefront of the new folk revival.
The seven members of The Bon Scotts met on lonely dating sites for musicians. Everyone was selected for their personalities. Luckily, it turns out they are also superb songwriters, musicians and performers. Amongst the rubble of seven instrumentalists, a charismatic union of found sounds can be heard. Rickety rhythms, folk instrumentation and bellowing choruses are pulled into line by front man Robert Zimmerman’s endearing satirical voice, examining the hypocrisy of popular culture and what it means to be young.
Released in August 2010, the band’s debut album, ODDERNITY, garnered much support from punters as well as critical acclaim from industry types. The first single, ‘The Kids Are Coming’, received airplay on triple J and community radio nationally. Subsequent singles, ‘We Like War’ and ‘We Can Cause Such A Fuss’ also received airplay on community radio across the country. Stop animation videos for ‘Kids Are Coming’ and ‘We Like War’ were also created by the band themselves, and served to further strengthen the creative core of the group – right after they nearly killed each other. Although not a single, ‘Home Again’ became the best selling song from the album and was used in the first episode of the Australian television series Offspring.
The release was supported by a thorough tour of Australia, which saw The Bon Scotts taking their energetic and mischievous live show to audiences across the country. From sell out crowds in Melbourne and Sydney to emergency house parties in the Blue Mountains, the tour was not only full of frivolous exploits, but it also cemented the band as a major contender on the live circuit. Sharing stages with the likes of Stornoway (UK), The Tom Fun Orchestra (CAN), and blowing away audiences at Sydney’s legendary Basement and the Port Fairy Folk Festival, the band proved that "Live...they are something to behold, all sweaty and beautiful, trashy and passionate” (The Dwarf).
In early 2011, The Bon Scotts received the Arts Victoria: Victoria Rocks – Presentation & Promotion grant and shortly after, the Australia Council for the Arts New Work grant in order to create and release their follow-up to ODDERNITY. So, after a summer of festivals and touring, the band returned to the studio to write and record their highly anticipated sophomore album, WE WILL ALL DIE AT THE HANDS OF CGI, out on October 28 through Popboomerang Records. Mixed by Tony Dupé (Holly Throsby, Grand Salvo), the album extends on their joyously cynical approach to music, with a keen focus on playful lyrics, catchy choruses and rare instrumentation.
The first single, ‘Polluted Sea’, is a quirky tune, driven by a catchy accordion line and propelled by toy piano, mandolin and sing along choruses. All perfectly accompanied by another themed Bon Scotts stop motion video.
Released in September, ‘Kids In Counterfeit’ is the second single from the album. Fueled with fever and charm, the song once again sees the band skillfully defying notions of plain, with an infectious blend of “youthful, unfiltered charm” (Mess and Noise).
