about

Scott Thurling Dec 30 2021

Being locked up can do funny things to you! I will admit to feeling a little frustrated on July 24, 2021, when I made the announcement to end Popboomerang Records. The news might have been a surprise to some, but it was one I had been contemplating for a while.
Covid-19 challenges to running a label were the tipping point after 18 months of cancelled live events and the gigantic increases in the price of international postage which was making exporting almost impossible.
I had also recently established a new record label, Sound As Ever 90-99, focussing on Australian ’90’s indie music, which was taking off, and it felt impossible to do justice to both ventures at the same time.

The reaction to my announcement from the Popboomerang community was overwhelming and messages poured in from fans, friends, media, and the artists on the label. It was touching to realise what the label and the music had meant to them. After hearing the news, lifelong Popboomerang artist Danny McDonald was moved to pen some thoughts and recollections which are printed in the booklet.

The overwhelming sentiment from the artists was “don’t end on this note”, so plans were quickly hatched for a final compilation release - “Marching Out Of Time.” (named after the Killjoys song of the same name)

"We wanted to write a song about Scott and the Popboomerang label ; about people who do things differently. In a lot of cases people like Scott do all the work , their passion keeps the music scene alive and they are often out of step with friends and family who lead more conventional lives. Of course, it had to be a pop song too." Craig/Anna

As with almost every Popboomerang compilation, the aim was to obtain as much rare and unreleased material and this compilation is no exception. The call went out to the artists, and I dug deep into the archives to find dusty old CDR’s and hard drives for possible songs.
Many of these songs are appearing on compact disc for the very first time. One coup was to uncover two previously unreleased Modern Giant songs which will now see the light of day and add to the musical legacy of member Gynia Favot who tragically passed away in August 2020.

One of the great outcomes of the decision was reconnecting with the Popboomerang family in planning this compilation and reminiscing about live shows and various ups and downs that go with releasing music on the indie scale!
The other key discovery from these conversations was that Tim Reid who has been chipping away on his second album “Lines” (since 2004!!) is near completion so we will release that in late 2022 as the official final release. The elusive and mysterious PB:077 catalogue number will finally see the light of day.

So, reflecting on the journey since 2002, it did feel at times that Popboomerang was marching out of time to the musical trends of the day but marching to the beat of your own drum is OK also.
It makes me proud to reflect on the 120 releases or so releases over the 20 years.

You never know! The boomerang may come back…… one day.
