(PB052) Georgia Fields: One Finger

It took a trip around the world and a business consultant who called her ‘sweetie’ for Georgia Fields to come to her senses and return to her life as a singer-songwriter.

Raised on a diet of Beach Boys, Tom Waits, Beatles and Madonna, Georgia was schooled in the art of popular song from an early age (her family were the chart-topping 1970s band, The Ferrets). She departed Australian shores in search of inspiration in 2006, traveling over land and sea from South America to Mexico, writing songs on a children’s sized nylon string guitar she bought in along the way.

Eventually she found herself working as a corporate receptionist in London. One morning, a director of the firm forgot her name. “Sweetie, can you fill up the coffee machine?” With the sudden and brutal realisation that if she didn’t do something soon, she’d be refilling office coffee machines for the rest of her life, Georgia promptly booked a flight home and called in sick from her stop-over in Bangkok.

Upon returning to Melbourne, Georgia wasted no time in reuniting with her childhood friend Judith Hamann, who as it happens is one of Melbourne’s finest cellists and multi-instrumentalists. Together they began arranging Georgia’s songs and developing her vintage-soaked acoustic-pop sound. The result is an endearing blend of the childlike naivety of experimental sounds, with mature and considered orchestral arrangements. Think Feist and
Sigor Ros making a record with Phil Spector in a toy shop… Without the guns and law suits of course.

Georgia’s new single One Finger tells the cheeky tale of a fight for the upper hand in a passive-aggressive friendship. Bonus material on the disc includes (amongst other goodies) an unlikely ‘stadium glock’ version of the Gunners classic Sweet Child O’ Mine. Tying in with the ‘house of cards’ artwork, each limited edition One Finger single will come with a unique collectable vintage playing card.
